FAQ

How did my windshield crack / chip?

Often, we are driving our vehicles when the crack or chip occurs. By far the most common causes are kicked-up gravel, driving behind construction vehicles, and during hailstorms. Less common causes are glass imperfections or extreme changes in pressure / temperature.

Gravel Roads: When driving at high speeds on gravel roads small pebbles and road debris get kicked-up and can hit your windshield at the wrong point or angle causing an unsightly crack or chip.

Construction Vehicles: If you happen to find yourself behind a construction vehicle or trailer hauling lose debris- especially uncovered- you may want to give yourself extra space. The wind is likely to send some lose debris your way causing a crack or chip in your windshield.

Hail: Hail is one of the most common causes of windshield cracks in vehicles kept outside. We have all heard stories of ping-pong sized hail or larger. When possible keep your vehicle inside a garage or under covered parking.

Glass Imperfections: Sometimes it’s just bad construction or installation. Some windshields come out of the production line with structural weaknesses, meaning they could shatter at any time. Or the windshield may have been improperly installed. A misaligned windshield can be more susceptible to cracks and breaks.

Pressure / Temperature Changes: Pressure or temperature fluctuations can cause your windshield to experience extra stress, making it much more susceptible to cracks and breaks.

Should I repair or replace my windshield?

If your windshield is damaged you should fix it as soon as possible. Driving with a damaged windshield may put you and your passagenger at risk- impaired sight, risk of shattering glass, and dangerous glass shards. But how do you know if you just need a quick repair or if the damage warrants a replacement? Below are some helpful tips or bring your vehicle to Will's Windshield R&R for a professional assessment.

Location of the Chip or Crack: If the crack is large enough that the driver’s vision is impaired you should replace the windshield. If the crack or chip is small and doesn’t impair the driver's vision a repair is more appropriate.

If a chip or crack reaches the edge or corner of the glass, the windshield will need to be replaced. Cracks near the edges are susceptible to vibrations and bumps, increasing the chance of the windshield shattering. However, if the cracks are not on the edge or coroners a repair may be all that’s needed.

Condition of the Interior Pane: Most windshields have two layers of glass. If only the outer layer is damaged a simple repair will suffice. However, if the inner layer has been damaged as well, the windshield will need to be replaced as it poses a safety risk to the driver.
